TL;DR — RACE WEEKEND GAME PLAN
- 1.Stay at an NEC or Resorts World hotel if budget allows — simplest weekend on the UK calendar.
- 2.Fly into BHX or train to Birmingham International; free Air-Rail Link plus covered walkway to the halls.
- 3.Carb-focused dinner at Resorts World the night before — Zizzi or Las Iguanas.
- 4.Easy 5 km shakeout around Pendigo Lake, or Babbs Mill parkrun on Saturday at 09:00.
- 5.Be on-site at least 60 minutes before your check-in time for registration, bag drop and warm-up.
- 6.Control the first half — don't blow up after the SkiErg and sled.
- 7.Refuel immediately, then Santai Spa or a booked massage.
- 8.Pre-book NEC parking if driving via the M42 — cheaper and far less stressful.
- 9.Cool outside, warm arena — wear removable layers.
- 10.Don't forget spare socks, anti-chafe, blister plasters and electrolytes.
QUICK TAKE — IS THIS A GOOD DESTINATION?
VERDICT: YES
Yes — Birmingham is one of the UK's most manageable HYROX weekends. The NEC is purpose-built for major events, transport links are excellent, and hotels sit within walking distance of the start line, so race-day friction is genuinely low.
⚠️ Caveat: HYROX Birmingham runs Tuesday 27 October – Sunday 1 November 2026 at the NEC — six days of heats. Best for first-timers, doubles and relay teams, spectators, and anyone who wants the lowest-hassle race weekend on the UK calendar. Cost is mid-to-premium during the event, but the convenience usually earns it.
One airport, one station serving the venue, multiple on-site hotels and strong motorway access. Logistics are about as easy as UK HYROX gets.
Minimal travel stress, indoor climate-controlled arena, flat running surface, easy accommodation. It loses points only when busy sessions congest the stations.
FAST COURSE?
Yes — indoor, flat, consistent temperature and good athlete flow (subject to how packed your heat is). These are subjective planning ratings so you can compare venues; HYROX doesn't publish official difficulty or PB figures.
CITY VIBE — WHAT ATHLETES NEED TO KNOW
Safety around the NEC is good — the campus is well-lit, busy and very safe during events. Walkability inside the venue area is excellent: hotels, food, a supermarket, the train station and the airport are all connected by covered walkways. The wider city is compact by UK standards, but the NEC sits around 20 minutes east of the city centre, so most athletes never need to go into central Birmingham unless they're sightseeing.
TYPICAL WEEKEND COSTS
Language: English. Currency: British Pound (£). Card is accepted almost everywhere and cash is rarely needed.

VENUE & LOCATION ANALYSIS
The NEC (National Exhibition Centre)
Pendigo Way, Marston Green, Birmingham B40 1NT
The NEC is one of Europe's largest exhibition centres. HYROX normally occupies a single large hall with wide running lanes plus ample warm-up and athlete space. It's a purpose-built event campus rather than a city-centre venue — hotels, the Resorts World leisure complex, food, a supermarket and Pendigo Lake are all within walking distance.
NEAREST STATIONS
- Birmingham International — West Coast Main Line — direct from London Euston (~1h10), Manchester, Coventry; covered 5-min walk to the halls
- Birmingham Airport (BHX) — Free Air-Rail Link people-mover to Birmingham International (~2-min ride), then covered walkway
- Birmingham New Street — City-centre hub — ~15 min by train to Birmingham International
WALKABILITY
~10/10 within the campus — covered walkways link the station, airport, hotels and halls. The wider city scores lower but you rarely need it.
Not a 'city centre' feel, but unbeatable for logistics. Open early: Costa, Starbucks and Greggs (terminal hours permitting), hotel breakfast buffets and NEC cafés (event-dependent).
🏃 RACE MORNING PLAN
On-site hotel: leave about 45 minutes before your check-in time. Airport hotel: 45–60 minutes. City centre: 75–90 minutes. Aim to be on-site at least 60 minutes before your check-in time and build in buffer for registration, bag drop, toilet queues and a full warm-up.
TRANSPORT LINKS
BEST AIRPORT: BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT (BHX)
Right next to the venue — one of the easiest airport-to-race transfers on the calendar. Roughly 10 minutes door to door via the free Air-Rail Link and covered walkway.
Birmingham Airport (BHX)
Adjacent to the venue. Free Air-Rail Link people-mover to Birmingham International station, then a covered 5-min walk to the halls.
Time to venue: ~10 min door-to-door
London Heathrow (LHR)
Long-haul alternative. Rail or coach to Birmingham International; slower but wider international coverage.
Time to venue: ~2h30–3h by rail/coach
Getting to the NEC
PUBLIC TRANSPORT TIPS
- Direct rail from Birmingham New Street, Coventry, London Euston and Manchester into Birmingham International.
- Birmingham International is a covered 5-minute walk from the halls — no shuttle needed.
- Buy tickets in advance for the best fares; contactless works on local services.
- The free Air-Rail Link people-mover connects Birmingham Airport to the station in about 2 minutes.
- Busy sessions can congest the station — allow extra time either side of peak waves.
🚕 Taxi / Uber / Ola
Taxis and Uber are reliable, but expect surge pricing right after race sessions. Airport around 10 minutes; city centre 25–35 minutes for roughly £30–45.
🚗 Driving
Strong M42 (J6) access. NEC parking is plentiful but pre-book — it's cheaper and far less stressful on a busy morning.

WHERE TO EAT
💡 Smart move: Keep dinner boring and close. Zizzi, Las Iguanas or your hotel restaurant at Resorts World give you predictable carbs and a short walk back — save the steak at Miller & Carter for after you cross the line.

Las Iguanas (Resorts World)
Athlete PickRice, chicken and simple carb-forward plates without a trek into the city.

City centre day out
Any TimeFor spectators: the Bullring, Cadbury World and central Birmingham if supporters want to make a day of it.
RACE STRATEGY
VENUE
One large NEC exhibition hall with wide running lanes, plenty of athlete space and strong spectator viewing. Indoor, climate-controlled and consistent underfoot.
COURSE FLOW
Flat running lanes, fast transitions and strong spectator support. The indoor surface is consistent and quick.
RUN SURFACE
Flat exhibition-hall flooring — predictable and fast. No camber, no cobbles, no weather.
HEAT
The hall stays warm even when it's cold outside. Busy sessions can queue up around the stations, so hold your line and don't panic-sprint transitions.
ELEVATION
Effectively flat.
⚠️ WHERE PEOPLE BLOW UP
Starting too fast, over-pacing the SkiErg, sled-push fatigue, and the burpee broad jumps. Control the first half and stay measured through the Wall Balls — many athletes bank early speed and pay for it late.

Best use: Same-day decompression after racing. Book ahead — slots go fast on event weekends.

📍 ~15 min from the NEC
Best use: A proper next-morning flush before you travel home.
SAUNAS & SPAS

PHYSIOS NEAR VENUE

Central Birmingham physio clinics
~25–35 min by train or taxi. Useful if the Solihull options are fully booked on event weekends.
WEATHER STRATEGY
LATE OCTOBER CONDITIONS
Late October / early November in Birmingham is typically 8–15°C outside, but the arena stays warm.
- Warm, easy-to-remove layers for the warm-up
- Waterproof jacket for the walk to the halls
- Race kit underneath your layers
- Dry top and hoodie for after
- Shoes you can keep dry on the covered walkways
💧 Hydration
Keep taking electrolytes — the indoor arena is warmer than the outdoor temperature suggests, and you will sweat more than the forecast implies.
🏟️ Indoor vs Outdoor
Dress for standing around outside, not for the hall — you'll strip layers before you race. Have a bag-drop plan for the layers you remove.
SHAKEOUT RUN ROUTES
EASY 5 KM — PENDIGO LAKE LOOP
Flat, paved, safe and right on the NEC campus. Water available nearby and no road crossings to worry about. Ideal for a pre-race shakeout the day before, or a very easy leg-loosener on race morning.
🏃 Parkrun
Babbs Mill parkrun (Babbs Mill Local Nature Reserve, Kingshurst, B37 6LN), Saturday 09:00 — ~4 miles from the NEC. Flat, lakeside, a mix of tarmac and grass, dog- and mostly pushchair-friendly. Nearest stations are Marston Green or Lea Hall (~40-min walk), so a short taxi is easiest from the NEC.
🏟️ Track Access
Alexander Stadium is sometimes listed for Birmingham events, but it's ~13 miles from the NEC and over an hour by public transport — not a practical race-weekend option.
Paved lakeside paths are safe in daylight. Late October mornings are dark and damp — take a light layer and watch for wet leaves.
GYMS NEAR VENUE
FUNCTIONAL / STRENGTH
CROSSFIT SOLIHULL (SHIRLEY, B90 4QT)
The closest CrossFit box to the NEC; friendly, well-coached, good for a pre-race class or open-gym session. Message ahead for a drop-in.

PureGym (Birmingham Airport area)
Commercial day-pass option for a simple, no-frills warm-up close to the venue.
HOTEL GYMS WORTH USING
Hilton Birmingham Metropole
Fitness room and pool — fine for mobility and activation.
