TL;DR — RACE WEEKEND GAME PLAN
- 1.Stay venue-adjacent (Aloft, ibis, Crowne Plaza, Sunborn) if budget allows — book early, these sell out first.
- 2.Fly into London City, or take the Elizabeth line direct from Heathrow to Custom House.
- 3.Tap contactless all weekend — fares cap daily.
- 4.Easy carbs near ExCeL the night before; Canary Wharf for the celebration meal.
- 5.Shakeout: flat loop around Royal Victoria Dock, or Beckton parkrun on Saturday (Victoria Dock parkrun has closed).
- 6.Be on-site at least 90 minutes before your check-in time — the waves are huge.
- 7.Don't let the noise bait a fast start; run your own splits through the Wall Balls.
- 8.Recovery: Crowne Plaza spa on-site, or contrast recovery at Third Space Canary Wharf.
- 9.Avoid driving in — ULEZ, Congestion Charge and limited parking.
- 10.Pack warm layers, gloves and a hat for the cold walk to the hall.
QUICK TAKE — IS THIS A GOOD DESTINATION?
VERDICT: YES
Yes — London ExCeL is the biggest, loudest HYROX on the calendar and the venue is built for it: wide halls, smooth indoor flooring, a clean Roxzone and one of the deepest fields outside the World Championships.
⚠️ Caveat: HYROX London ExCeL runs Wednesday 2 – Sunday 6 December 2026 — five days of heats, plus an Elite Series race on top of the main programme. It suits everyone, with the caveat that 'biggest' also means 'busiest': more crowds, more moving parts, and an atmosphere that tempts you to go out way too fast. Cost is high, but transport and venue-adjacent hotels are excellent.
Transport and airport access are superb, but the sheer scale — record crowds, packed start waves, London logistics — adds friction that a venue like Birmingham doesn't have.
Fast, flat, climate-controlled hall with wide running lanes. The atmosphere is the double-edged sword: it can carry you to a PB or bait you into a blow-up.
FAST COURSE?
Yes — smooth indoor surface, wide lanes, clean transitions and consistent temperature. These are subjective planning ratings so you can compare venues; HYROX doesn't publish official difficulty or PB figures.
CITY VIBE — WHAT ATHLETES NEED TO KNOW
Safety is good — the Royal Docks and the ExCeL campus are modern, well-lit and busy during events, with standard big-city awareness after dark. Walkability immediately around the venue is excellent: hotels, stations, the dockside path and food are all a few minutes on foot. The wider Royal Docks area is spread out and quiet in the evenings; Canary Wharf (~15 min) is where the density of restaurants, gyms and shops is.
TYPICAL WEEKEND COSTS
Language: English. Currency: British Pound (£). Card and contactless work everywhere — tap the same card all weekend for the daily fare cap.
BEST BASE NEIGHBOURHOODS
Royal Victoria Dock / ExCeL
Best for: Lowest stress — walk to registration.
Canary Wharf
Best for: Best for food, gyms and recovery; ~15 min by DLR or Elizabeth line.
Stratford
Best for: Good value and a big transport hub (Elizabeth line, Jubilee, DLR), ~15–20 min.
Greenwich
Best for: Nicer evenings and river views; reach ExCeL via the London Cable Car or DLR.
VENUE & LOCATION ANALYSIS
ExCeL London
1 Western Gateway, Royal Victoria Dock, London E16 1XL
ExCeL is one of Europe's largest exhibition centres (100,000+ m² across connected halls). HYROX takes over a long stretch of halls with the running loop on smooth indoor flooring, full climate control and a wide, clean Roxzone. This December event is at ExCeL — not to be confused with London's spring races, which run at Olympia.
NEAREST STATIONS
- Custom House — Elizabeth line + DLR — covered walkway straight into ExCeL
- Prince Regent (DLR) — Serves the venue's east end
- Royal Victoria (DLR) — Serves the venue's west end
- London City Airport (DLR) — A short DLR hop from the venue
WALKABILITY
~9/10 within the venue and dockside — hotels, stations and food are minutes away on foot. The wider Royal Docks area is quieter and more spread out.
The Royal Victoria Dock — waterfront, modern and quiet at night. On-site there's dining along the ExCeL boulevard plus convenience shops; for a wider choice head to Canary Wharf. Open early: ExCeL boulevard coffee outlets, hotel breakfasts, and chains around Custom House and Canary Wharf.
🏃 RACE MORNING PLAN
ExCeL / dockside hotel: leave ~45–60 minutes before your check-in time. Canary Wharf or Stratford: ~60–75 minutes. Central London: ~75–90 minutes. Aim to be on-site at least 90 minutes before your check-in time — London's start waves are huge and bag drop, toilets and warm-up areas get busy fast.
TRANSPORT LINKS
BEST AIRPORT: LONDON CITY AIRPORT (LCY)
Venue-adjacent and by far the easiest — a short DLR hop or the 474 bus from Custom House. Ideal if you're flying in from within the UK or Europe.
London City (LCY)
Right next to the venue. Short DLR hop, or the 474 bus from Custom House.
Time to venue: ~10–15 min
London Heathrow (LHR)
Elizabeth line runs direct to Custom House with no changes — the single best airport-to-venue link in London.
Time to venue: ~50 min
Gatwick / Stansted / Luton (LGW / STN / LTN)
All route via central London — mainline terminus, then Elizabeth line or DLR out to Custom House.
Time to venue: ~75–110 min
Getting to ExCeL
PUBLIC TRANSPORT TIPS
- Excellent and the default choice — Elizabeth line, DLR and Jubilee cover everything.
- Custom House (Elizabeth line + DLR) links by covered walkway directly into ExCeL.
- Prince Regent (DLR) serves the east end of the venue; Royal Victoria (DLR) the west end.
- Use contactless or an Oyster; fares cap daily, so tap the same card all weekend.
- Central London to Custom House is roughly 13–20 minutes (13 min to Farringdon on the Elizabeth line).
🚕 Taxi / Uber / Ola
Reliable but pricey, and slower than rail at peak. Expect surge pricing right after the big evening waves — 20–35 min and £25–40 from the City.
🚗 Driving
Not recommended. ExCeL parking is limited and expensive during a sell-out event, and London traffic plus the ULEZ and Congestion Charge make rail the obvious call. If you must drive, pre-book ExCeL parking.

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock by the west entrance. Larger-than-average rooms, on-board spa, restaurant and bar, dock views.

WHERE TO EAT
💡 Smart move: Keep dinner boring and close. Zizzi, Las Iguanas or your hotel restaurant at Resorts World give you predictable carbs and a short walk back — save the steak at Miller & Carter for after you cross the line.
ExCeL boulevard restaurants
Athlete PickEasy pasta and rice options within a 5-minute walk of the halls — the lowest-effort night-before dinner.
Dockside hotel restaurants
Athlete PickPredictable carbs at the Aloft, Novotel and Crowne Plaza without leaving the campus.
Canary Wharf restaurants
Athlete PickWidest spread in the area — steak, ramen, burgers, whatever your reward looks like. ~15 min by DLR or Elizabeth line.
ExCeL boulevard coffee chains
Athlete PickChains along the boulevard and around Custom House open early on race mornings.
Nisa / Premier convenience shops
Athlete PickRight by ExCeL for gels, bananas, electrolytes and race-morning backup.
M&S / Waitrose, Canary Wharf
Athlete PickThe easiest proper supermarket run if you are self-catering.
THINGS TO DO
Royal Victoria Dock stroll
Pre-RaceEasy walk around the dock and over the Royal Victoria footbridge, with coffee on the dockside. Low fatigue.
Plane-spotting at London City
Pre-RaceA short, flat wander over towards the airport — low-effort race-eve time-killer.
London Cable Car to the O2
Post-RaceCross the Thames for food and a drink at the O2 — celebration-friendly and easy on the legs.
Canary Wharf or central London
Any TimeDinner and bars in Canary Wharf, or into town — 13 min to Farringdon on the Elizabeth line. Greenwich is also a short hop for spectators.
RACE STRATEGY
VENUE
A long stretch of connected ExCeL halls with wide running lanes, a clean Roxzone and smooth indoor flooring — one of the fastest-feeling venues on the circuit, and superb for spectators with long sightlines down the lanes.
COURSE FLOW
Wide lanes and long straights. The scale means you should settle into your own rhythm rather than chasing the crowd's pace.
RUN SURFACE
Smooth, flat exhibition-hall flooring — predictable and quick, with no weather to deal with.
HEAT
The hall stays warm, but the bigger risk is the atmosphere: London's noise and huge waves push people out far too hard.
ELEVATION
Flat.
⚠️ WHERE PEOPLE BLOW UP
An adrenaline-fuelled fast start, over-cooking the SkiErg, sled-push fatigue and the burpee broad jumps. In a field this deep it's easy to race the people around you — run your own splits and stay controlled through the Wall Balls.

RECOVERY SPOTS
ICE BATHS / COLD PLUNGE
THIRD SPACE CANARY WHARF — RECOVERY SPA
Cold plunge, sauna, infrared and a 23m pool. It is also where a lot of London's HYROX athletes train.
📍 ~15 min by DLR / Elizabeth line
Best use: A proper contrast-recovery session the evening after racing, or the next morning.
THE SPA AT CROWNE PLAZA LONDON DOCKLANDS
Hydrotherapy and steam a few minutes from the venue.
📍 ~6-min walk from ExCeL
Best use: Same-day decompression without a journey.
SAUNAS & SPAS

Best use: Same-day decompression after racing.
SUNBORN LONDON ON-BOARD SPA
Small spa on the yacht hotel in Royal Victoria Dock, for guests.
Best use: Controlled recovery without leaving your base.
PHYSIOS NEAR VENUE
Canary Wharf physio and sports massage clinics
~15 min by DLR or Elizabeth line. Best for niggle triage, taping and post-race flush work. Book before race weekend — December ExCeL fills fast.
Docklands clinics
Several closer options around the Royal Docks and Poplar if Canary Wharf is fully booked.
WEATHER STRATEGY
EARLY DECEMBER CONDITIONS
Early December in London is cold and often damp — roughly 3–9°C, with a real chance of rain or frost on race mornings.
- Hat and gloves for the walk in and the queues
- Warm layer over easy-to-strip warm-up clothing
- Waterproof outer layer
- Race kit underneath
- Dry top and hoodie for after
💧 Hydration
You sweat less in the cold, but the heated hall still dehydrates you — keep taking electrolytes.
🏟️ Indoor vs Outdoor
Dress for standing outside in the cold, not for the hall. The hall is warm, so you will peel down before you race — have a bag-drop plan for the layers you remove.
SHAKEOUT RUN ROUTES
EASY LOOP — ROYAL VICTORIA DOCK PERIMETER
Flat, paved and traffic-free, running right along the dockside past ExCeL and under the London City flight path. Scenic in a post-industrial way, and you can dial it from 2–5 km. The ideal on-site shakeout.
🏃 Parkrun
Beckton parkrun (Beckton District Park South), Saturday 09:00 — ~1.3 miles from ExCeL, nearest DLR is Royal Albert (~600 m). Note: the old Victoria Dock parkrun that ran past ExCeL closed at the end of 2025, so don't turn up at the dock expecting it.
🏟️ Track Access
Thames Barrier Park (Pontoon Dock DLR) is the other easy nearby option — flat riverside jogging a few minutes from the venue.
Paved dockside paths are safe and well-lit, but early December mornings are dark, cold and often damp — take a warm layer and watch for frost.

COMMERCIAL GYMS

HOTEL GYMS WORTH USING
Aloft London ExCeL
Gym and pool — fine for mobility and activation.
Crowne Plaza London Docklands
Gym, pool and spa access for guests.
Novotel London ExCeL
Fitness room, enough for mobility work.
