TL;DR — RACE WEEKEND GAME PLAN
- 1.Stay at Novotel or Pan Pacific if the budget allows — the internal link to the hall removes every weather and transport variable from your morning. Otherwise Crowne Plaza across the footbridge.
- 2.Skip the myki. Tap on with your bank card or phone. Fares are half price until 1 January 2027 with a AU$5.70 daily cap.
- 3.SkyBus to Southern Cross then walk if you are travelling light, taxi if you are not. Both are under 45 minutes door to door.
- 4.Do your race-morning shop at Clarendon Street IGA the night before. It opens at 7:00 am, but you do not want to be shopping at 6:00 am.
- 5.Race morning: leave 90 minutes before your wave, and add 10 minutes of lift buffer if you are high up in the Novotel tower.
- 6.Confirm your entrance — Convention Centre Place or Clarendon Street. The complex runs 600 m end to end and the hall assignment is unpublished.
- 7.Check the forecast three days out. Above 28°C, go out slower on run one and take every hydration station.
- 8.Break the wall balls into planned sets from rep one. In a hot hall, grip and shoulders fail before your legs do.
- 9.Pre-book your sauna or ice bath. Melbourne Myotherapy is the only bodywork option open seven days until 8:00 pm.
- 10.Shakeout on the river loop from South Wharf Promenade. Albert parkrun on Saturday 12 December only if you are not racing that morning.
QUICK TAKE — IS THIS A GOOD DESTINATION?
VERDICT: YES
Five race days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December 2026. This is about as low-friction as a race weekend gets: two hotels connect internally into the venue, Southern Cross station is a 10 minute walk, the airport transfer is under half an hour, and the whole precinct is flat and step-free. Cost level is mid to high — Melbourne hotel rates are not cheap — but race week lands before the Victorian school summer holidays begin on 18 December, so you miss the peak surge. If it is your first HYROX, the logistics will not be what beats you.
⚠️ Caveat: Heat is the variable that decides this race. December in Melbourne averages a 24°C high, but the city swings hard — the December record is 43°C and the coolest December day on record topped out at 13°C. A 35°C day outside makes a full exhibition hall genuinely hot, and the last waves each day start around 8:00 pm. HYROX has not published the hall assignment or the lap configuration, and lap count drives congestion more than anything else at a venue this size. If you are flying long-haul, the 11 hour time difference from the UK and a 5:51 am sunrise are the other two things to plan for.
Compact precinct, short transfers, five race days spreading the field, and tap-and-go transport with half-price fares. The main stressor is jet lag, not logistics.
Indoor, flat, sea level. December heat inside a full hall and the unpublished lap configuration are the two open variables.
FAST COURSE?
Depends. Flat and indoor is fast. The lap configuration is TBC, and lap count drives congestion more than anything else at this venue size.
CITY VIBE — WHAT ATHLETES NEED TO KNOW
MCEC sits on the Yarra's south bank in South Wharf, between the river and the West Gate Freeway. DFO South Wharf outlet centre is attached, South Wharf Promenade runs along the river with bars and restaurants, and Crown Melbourne is 7 minutes east. Everything closes early by international standards, which matters if your wave finishes at 8:00 pm. Your real decision is which side of the river to sleep on: South Wharf for a weatherproof internal walk to the hall, Docklands and Spencer Street for value and transport, Southbank for spectators and late kitchens, South Melbourne for recovery studios and quiet nights.
TYPICAL WEEKEND COSTS
Language: English. Currency: Australian dollar. Card works everywhere, including trams and trains via tap-and-go, so you do not need Australian cash — though card surcharges of roughly 1.2 to 1.9 percent are common at hotels and are disclosed at checkout. Tipping is not expected; staff are paid a full wage, so round up or leave 10 percent only for genuinely good service. No Victorian public holiday falls between 9 and 13 December 2026, and retail trades seven days on shorter Sunday hours.
BEST BASE NEIGHBOURHOODS
South Wharf
Best for: Zero-friction race mornings. Two hotels linked internally to the hall, DFO attached, riverside food. Very quiet after 9:00 pm.
Docklands & Spencer Street
Best for: Value and transport. Southern Cross on your doorstep, Free Tram Zone, cheaper beds.
Southbank
Best for: Spectators and post-race dinner. Crown Melbourne, more food, 7 to 15 minutes to the venue.
South Melbourne
Best for: Recovery access and quiet nights. Saunas, physios and CrossFit boxes cluster here, 10 to 15 minutes out.
VENUE & LOCATION ANALYSIS
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)
1 Convention Centre Pl, South Wharf VIC 3006, Australia
One connected complex of three buildings running roughly 600 m end to end, so the walk from one entrance to the far hall can add 8 minutes on its own. Two entrances matter: Convention Centre Place, next to DFO South Wharf and the two hotels, and Clarendon Street, the exhibition hall entrance directly opposite the tram stop. HYROX has not published which halls it is using, so confirm your entrance when the race pack lands. Divisions are Open, Pro, Adaptive, Doubles, Doubles Pro and Relay, and the last wave each day starts around 8:00 pm.
NEAREST STATIONS
- Southern Cross Station — About 950 m. MCEC lists it as a 10 minute walk, and the SkyBus terminal is on site
- Stop 124A Casino/MCEC/Clarendon Street — Tram routes 96, 109 and 12, directly outside the Clarendon Street entrance
- Melbourne Airport (MEL, Tullamarine) — SkyBus City Express to Southern Cross in 22 to 30 minutes, then walk. No airport train until roughly 2033
- Free Tram Zone — Covers the CBD grid and Docklands only. Assume the Casino/MCEC stop is a paid stop
WALKABILITY
Excellent. Flat, wide footpaths, no hills, and the whole precinct is stroller and bag friendly. The only distance that bites is the 600 m inside the complex itself.
Café Orr inside Pan Pacific opens 6:30 am Monday to Friday and is closed at weekends. Studio Coffee at DFO opens 7:00 am daily. Clarendon Street IGA at 42-48 Clarendon St opens 7:00 am seven days and is 3 minutes away — that is your race-morning shop. Woolworths inside Southern Cross opens 5:30 am on weekdays and is the earliest full shop in the area. DFO retail runs 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, so it is shut when a morning wave starts and shut again when an evening wave finishes.
🏃 RACE MORNING PLAN
Leave your hotel 90 minutes before your wave if you are staying within 15 minutes of the venue: 20 minutes of buffer, 15 minutes travel and 55 minutes on site for check-in, bag drop, the toilet queue and your warm-up. Staying further out, add the transit time and keep the 90 minutes intact. If you are high up in the Novotel tower, add 10 minutes of lift buffer — guests repeatedly flag slow lifts. Bag drop and the toilets nearest the roxzone are where the queues form, and Wednesday and Thursday both open with Men's Open.
TRANSPORT LINKS
BEST AIRPORT: MELBOURNE (TULLAMARINE) (MEL)
The only realistic option. Avalon (AVV) is served by SkyBus but sits far further west and adds an hour. There is no airport train — Melbourne Airport Rail is under construction with completion expected around 2033, so ignore any guide that mentions a rail link.
Melbourne Tullamarine — SkyBus + walk (MEL)
SkyBus City Express runs 4:00 am to 1:00 am every 10 to 20 minutes, roughly AU$20 to AU$25 one way as of August 2026, then 10 to 12 minutes on foot from Southern Cross. SkyBus is excluded from the half-price fare scheme.
Time to venue: 32-42 min
Melbourne Tullamarine — taxi or rideshare (MEL)
Roughly AU$50 to AU$75 as of August 2026, 25 to 35 minutes off-peak and longer in weekday peak. Drop-off is at the Convention Centre Place entrance, which has a dedicated taxi rank and rideshare point.
Time to venue: 25-35 min

PUBLIC TRANSPORT TIPS
- Trams, trains and buses are frequent and reliable, and two recent changes both work in your favour.
- Fares are half price across Victoria from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027, covering all five race days. The full-fare daily cap is AU$5.70. SkyBus is excluded.
- Tap-and-go with a bank card, phone or watch launched on trains in June 2026 and on trams later that month, so you no longer need to buy a myki — though myki still works.
- Tram stop 124A Casino/MCEC/Clarendon Street sits directly outside the Clarendon Street entrance on routes 96, 109 and 12.
- The Free Tram Zone covers the CBD grid and Docklands. Stops south of the river, including Albert Park, sit outside it — check the sign and assume Casino/MCEC is a paid stop.
- Southern Cross is roughly 950 m away, a 10 minute walk, with Woolworths inside opening 5:30 am on weekdays.
🚕 Taxi / Uber / Ola
Good availability. Surge risk is real on Friday and Saturday nights when the last waves finish around 8:00 pm and Crown empties at the same time. Walk five minutes north before you order.
🚗 Driving
Four car parks serve MCEC: Melbourne Exhibition Centre (entry off Normanby Road), DFO South Wharf (entry off Convention Centre Place or Munro Street), Siddeley Street and Montague Street, all open 24 hours. Hotel parking runs about AU$50 per night at Novotel and Pan Pacific as of August 2026, with valet at Pan Pacific around AU$75. Do not drive unless you have a reason to.
WHERE TO STAY
Novotel Melbourne South Wharf
Near venueAU$180-AU$300 per night
Best for: Rolling out of bed and into the hall with zero weather exposure
Direct internal access to MCEC, so your real door-to-hall time is shorter than any walking figure suggests. 347 rooms across 26 levels, a 24 hour fitness centre, soundproofed rooms, buffet breakfast and air conditioning throughout. Honest tradeoff: guest reviews repeatedly flag slow and unreliable lifts, and in a 26 storey tower on a race morning that is a genuine risk — build 10 minutes of lift buffer in, or take the stairs if you are on a low floor. Parking is a paid extra at around AU$50 per day.
AU$60-AU$130 per night
Best for: The lowest nightly rate still inside a 10 minute walk
Air conditioning, a small fridge in every room, a rooftop sundeck, a 24 hour front desk and 114 rooms — with Woolworths inside Southern Cross 3 minutes away and opening at 5:30 am on weekdays. Honest tradeoff: standard rooms are genuinely small, and the hotel sits between two main roads and the rail viaduct, with reviewers reporting road and viaduct noise depending on room position. Ask for a room away from Spencer Street. There is no on-site gym.
Crowne Plaza Melbourne
Mid-rangeAU$200-AU$320 per night
Best for: A proper gym and a pool without paying South Wharf rates
The best balance of price, facilities and distance on this list: a 24 hour fitness centre, a heated rooftop pool, three dining outlets, 485 rooms, a 5 minute walk to Southern Cross, and a Free Tram Zone stop about 20 m from the door. Honest tradeoff: the building is older than the South Wharf hotels and reviewers describe it as well maintained rather than new, and you cross the Yarra to reach the venue, which adds a few minutes and some wind exposure on an exposed bridge.
Pan Pacific Melbourne
LuxuryAU$320-AU$550 per night
Best for: The closest bed to the start line, at a price
Internally linked to MCEC, with a 24 hour Precor fitness centre, blackout blinds, 396 rooms, Café Orr on site opening 6:30 am on weekdays and the Pacific Club Lounge with breakfast and all-day refreshments. Honest tradeoff: it is the priciest option here and reviews on service consistency are mixed for a five-star. Café Orr is closed Saturday and Sunday, so weekend racers lose the on-site early breakfast, and parking is AU$50 self or AU$75 valet per day. If you see it listed as Hilton Melbourne South Wharf, that is a stale listing under an old name.

WHERE TO EAT
💡 Smart move: DFO South Wharf is attached to the venue but only trades 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, so it is shut when a morning wave starts and shut again when an evening wave finishes. Do your race-morning shop the night before at Clarendon Street IGA, 3 minutes away and open to 11:00 pm — or use Woolworths inside Southern Cross, which opens 5:30 am on weekdays.
Mr. Carpano & Plus 5
Athlete PickMr. Carpano on level 6 of the Novotel serves Italian from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm daily, which is the safest bet for a Wednesday or Thursday night when much of South Wharf runs quiet. Plus 5 at 37 South Wharf Promenade does a well-reviewed mushroom gnocchi 4 minutes away but is closed Mondays. Gradi at Crown Melbourne opens at midday daily and is the reliable pasta and pizza option 8 minutes east.
The Boatbuilders Yard
Athlete PickThe closest sit-down option at 4 minutes on South Wharf Promenade, open to 9:00 pm most nights and 10:00 pm Wednesday to Saturday. If your wave finishes at 8:00 pm you will be tight, so book — or plan for Crown Melbourne, 7 minutes east, where the kitchens run later and there is the highest concentration of late food near the venue.
Café Orr & Studio Coffee
Athlete PickCafé Orr inside Pan Pacific opens 6:30 am Monday to Friday and is closed at weekends, making it the earliest option on race days one to three. Studio Coffee at DFO opens 7:00 am daily, 10 minutes away. CIEL Cafe at 48 Cecil St, Southbank opens 8:00 am daily for proper brunch, and The Hardware Société at 10 Katherine Pl opens 7:30 am on weekdays — popular, so expect a wait.
Clarendon Street IGA
Athlete Pick42-48 Clarendon St, open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm every day and 3 minutes from the Clarendon Street entrance. This is your race-morning shop, done the night before. FoodWorks South Wharf on Rona Walk is 8 minutes at convenience prices, and Woolworths inside Southern Cross opens 5:30 am on weekdays for the earliest full shop in the area.
THINGS TO DO
South Wharf Promenade & Polly Woodside
Pre-RaceWalk the promenade and look at Polly Woodside, the 1885 tall ship moored outside the venue, then sit by the Yarra. Keep it to an hour and stay off your feet.
National Gallery of Victoria
Pre-RaceA flat 15 minute walk along Southbank if you want something indoors and seated the day before you race. Free general entry, and easy to cut short.
Crown Melbourne
Post-Race8 Whiteman Street, 7 minutes east, with the highest concentration of late kitchens and bars near the venue. South Wharf Promenade is closer but quieter and winds down earlier.
St Kilda beach & DFO South Wharf
Any TimeDFO is attached to the venue, open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Fridays — good for spectators, useless on race mornings. Trams 96 or 12 from Clarendon Street reach St Kilda beach in about 25 minutes.
RACE STRATEGY
VENUE
HYROX runs its standard format here: 8 km of running split into eight 1 km laps with the eight functional stations between them. The 2026 hall assignment and lap configuration had not been published at the time of writing, and lap count drives congestion more than anything else at a venue this size. Walk the course during your check-in window and treat any lap map you find online as unconfirmed.
COURSE FLOW
Five race days, Wednesday to Sunday, with waves running to roughly 8:00 pm each day. That spreads the field, but the morning waves are the busiest and Wednesday and Thursday both open with Men's Open. Get your bag down early and use a toilet away from the warm-up area.
RUN SURFACE
Indoor exhibition hall flooring, flat, sealed and sea level. Fast and unforgiving. A plated shoe pays off, but do not test a new pair here.
HEAT
This is the variable that will decide your race. December in Melbourne averages a 24°C high, but the December record high is 43°C, set on 31 December 2005, and the coolest December day on record topped out at 13°C. A 35°C day outside will make a full exhibition hall genuinely hot, especially for the late-afternoon and evening waves. If your wave is late on a warm day, add 5 to 10 seconds per kilometre to your run pace and take every hydration station — the course has one.
ELEVATION
Sea level and flat throughout. The only distance that costs you is the 600 m inside the complex itself, which can add 8 minutes between the wrong entrance and your hall.
⚠️ WHERE PEOPLE BLOW UP
Two places, both heat-driven. The sled push at station two, because going out hot on run one in a warm hall and hitting the sled with an elevated core temperature is the classic Melbourne-in-December error — run one should feel embarrassingly easy. And the wall balls, because by station eight in a hot hall grip and shoulders fail faster than legs. Break the wall balls into planned sets from rep one rather than going unbroken and blowing up at 40.

Time Cutoff
Depends. Flat, indoor and sea level is fast, but the lap configuration is TBC and a hot hall on a 35°C Melbourne day changes the maths for anyone in a late wave.
Source: Venue, address, race dates, transport fares, opening hours and climate figures verified from the official HYROX Melbourne event page, MCEC's plan-your-visit information, SkyBus timetables, the Victorian half-price travel scheme and Melbourne December climate records, all as of 30 August 2026. Hall assignment, lap counts and individual start times were still unpublished.
RECOVERY SPOTS
ICE BATHS / COLD PLUNGE

43/49 Buckhurst St. Sauna and cold plunge in a private room, which suits anyone who does not want a communal setup. Open from 6:00 am on weekdays, 8:00 am to noon Saturday, closed Sunday. Book ahead — reviewers have flagged inconsistent communication on memberships.

Best use: A pre-race sauna on a weekday morning.
MY RECOVERY LOUNGE, PORT MELBOURNE
381 Bay St. Finnish sauna, ice bath, magnesium pool and compression boots. Opens noon Tuesday to Thursday, 10:00 am Monday and Friday, 9:00 am at weekends.

REMEDY GROUNDS, SOUTH MELBOURNE

STATE SPORT CENTRES MSAC, ALBERT PARK
30 Aughtie Dr, open 5:30 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays, with a large gym, two 50 m pools, sauna and cold plunge on day entry. The best value contrast setup in the area.
Best use: A pool-based shakeout plus contrast work in one trip.
PHYSIOS NEAR VENUE
Elite Sports Physiotherapy, 1 Freshwater Pl, Southbank
10 minutes from the venue, weekdays only and closed at weekends — so useful before a Wednesday to Friday race, no use to you on the 12th or 13th.
Melbourne Myotherapy, 216 York St, South Melbourne
Open 8:00 am to 8:00 pm seven days, about 15 minutes on foot. The fallback for a weekend race day.
WEATHER STRATEGY
DECEMBER CONDITIONS
Melbourne averages a 24°C high and a 13°C low in December, with around nine rain days and 63 mm across the month. Sunrise is 5:51 am and sunset around 8:35 pm during race week, so daylight is long at both ends. The city is on AEDT, UTC+11 — an 11 hour difference from the UK. The city also swings hard: the December record high is 43°C and the coolest December day on record topped out at 13°C.
- Singlet and your shortest shorts if the forecast is 28°C or above
- A long-sleeve base you can strip after run one if it is below 18°C
- A throwaway layer for the walk in — the exposed river footbridges get windy
- Dry layers in your bag for the moment you finish
- Sunglasses and SPF 50+ for the long daylight either side of your wave
💧 Hydration
Pre-cool with cold fluid in the 30 minutes before your wave on a warm day, and take every hydration station on the course. Water with electrolytes from waking, not just on the start line.
🏟️ Indoor vs Outdoor
All racing is indoors on a level hall floor. Everything either side of it is outdoors and can be anything from 13°C to 40°C. Dress for the hall, not the walk.
SHAKEOUT RUN ROUTES
SOUTH WHARF RIVER LOOP — ABOUT 5 KM
Start at South Wharf Promenade outside the Clarendon Street entrance, run west along the river past Polly Woodside, cross the Seafarers Bridge to the north bank, continue west into Docklands, then loop back over Webb Bridge and return along the south bank. Flat, sealed shared path, well lit, with no road crossings on most of it. Toilets and water are thin on this route, so use your hotel before you leave and carry a bottle.
🏃 Parkrun
Albert (Melbourne) parkrun meets at the Coot Picnic Area in Albert Park, opposite MSAC, every Saturday at 8:00 am. Roughly 43 minutes on foot, or tram 12 from Clarendon Street to Stop 130. A flat lake loop and one of the faster parkruns in Melbourne, with water fountains about every kilometre and public toilets at the Coot Picnic Area. Saturday 12 December is a race day, so this only works if you are not racing that morning.
🏟️ Track Access
State Sport Centres MSAC at 30 Aughtie Dr, Albert Park opens 5:30 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays and has a large gym, two 50 m pools, sauna and cold plunge on a day-entry basis.
Sealed shared path throughout the river loop, flat and well used. The exposed river footbridges get windy, so take a layer for the walk out even on a warm morning.

VENUE DAY TIMELINE
SPECTATOR GUIDE
BEST VIEWING ZONES
- A race wristband only gets an athlete into the venue on their own race day — spectators need a spectator ticket, and so do athletes watching on a day they are not racing
- HYROX has not published the 2026 floorplan, so specific zones are unconfirmed
- The wall ball and sled areas give the most sustained view of one athlete
- The finish gantry is where you want to be for the last 10 minutes
- Seating is limited and unconfirmed — assume you will be standing for long stretches
FAMILY LOGISTICS
- MCEC has extensive public toilets throughout the concourse
- DFO South Wharf is attached with a food court, but it opens at 10:00 am and closes at 6:00 pm — for an 8:00 am start or an 8:00 pm finish you need the in-venue vendors or Clarendon Street IGA
- The whole precinct is flat and step-free, and MCEC is fully accessible for prams and wheelchairs
- It is loud for hours. Bring ear defenders for young children
- Race week runs Wednesday to Sunday: a Wednesday or Thursday race means a genuinely quiet city either side, a weekend race means a busy precinct and a busy Crown
📍 MEET-UP PLAN
Agree a spot before you race, because phone signal in a full exhibition hall is unreliable. The best option is outside the Convention Centre Place entrance by the taxi rank — a single named point everyone can find. Set a time, not a signal.

LOCAL RULES & EMERGENCY INFO
Skip the myki
Tap on with your bank card, phone or watch — launched on trains in June 2026 and trams later that month. Fares are half price across Victoria until 1 January 2027, with a AU$5.70 full-fare daily cap. SkyBus is excluded.
There is no airport train
Melbourne Airport Rail is under construction with completion expected around 2033. SkyBus to Southern Cross in 22 to 30 minutes, or a taxi. Ignore any guide that mentions a rail link.
Confirm your entrance
MCEC is one complex of three buildings running roughly 600 m end to end. Convention Centre Place is by the hotels and DFO; Clarendon Street is the exhibition entrance by the tram stop. The hall assignment is unpublished — check your race pack.
Tipping
Not expected. Staff are paid a full wage. Round up or leave 10 percent for genuinely good service if you want to, but nobody will chase you.
Cash vs card
Card everywhere, including trams and trains via tap-and-go. Card surcharges of roughly 1.2 to 1.9 percent are common at hotels and are disclosed at checkout. You do not need Australian cash.
Sunday and holiday trading
